In Part 4 of "Spun Tone Scales," there are mini "swells" on each note. Click here to print out the sheet music for this scale.
This exercise is helpful for developing awareness of the contact point, tone development and bow distribution and the coordination of bow weight with bow speed, all of which contribute to a more expressive use of the bow. Since there is a coordinated gentle squeeze and release action in the bow hold, it also helps with learning to relax and soften the thumb. At this level it is also great for starting to develop portato.*
*Portato [porˈtaːto] (Italian, past participle of portare, "to carry") in music denotes a smooth, pulsing articulation and is often notated by adding dots under slur markings. (Wikipedia)
