This exercise is helpful for developing awareness of the contact point, tone development and bow distribution and the coordination of bow weight with bow speed, all of which contribute to a more expressive use of the bow. Since there is a coordinated gentle squeeze and release action in the bow hold, it also helps with learning to relax and soften the thumb.
